Dayton commissioner proposes mandatory HIV tests

Dayton-A move by the city to require everyone arrested for prostitution to be tested for HIV would likely stir up opposition.

"Mandatory testing violates an individual's right to privacy," Joan Englund, legal director for the ACLU of Ohio, said October 29. “Furthermore, it does not further the public-health goals of preventing the transmission of AIDS. What we need is more public education."

City Commissioner Abner Orick said he wants an ordinance that would require both alleged prostitutes and customers who are arrested to be tested for HIV.

"They're passing that disease along. I think it's a very serious thing," Orick said.

A state law, which took effect July 1, makes prostitution-related crimes a felony if committed by people who know they are infected with HIV. Previously, the offense was a misdemeanor.

Gay victims of killer found

Indianapolis-At least four gay men have been identified among the remains of seven bodies discovered on an 18-acre suburban estate whose owner committed suicide in July. Three were prostitutes working the gay bars in Indianapolis, police said.

Perhaps the saddest part is that their families didn't come looking for them, members of the gay community said.

"They go to the nearest big city where there's a number of gay clubs and gay life," said Ted Fleischaker, publisher of The Word, an Indianapolis lesbian-gay newspaper. "They may or may not even bother to tell their mom and dad they're even gone. They won't even go home for Christmas."

The dead were found along with spent shotgun shells and handcuffs on the Fox Hollow Farms estate. Herbert Baumeister, 49, lived there until he went to Canada, where he shot himself to death in a park in Ontario, police said.

Company drops anti-gay flyers

Anti-gay flyers that had been produced and marketed to political candidates have been discontinued, after receiving attention by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, the Washington Blade and others.

"Slay your liberal opponents with the hottest pro-family direct mail peice for 1996," promised advertisements from Picture Perfect Promotions of conservative Orange County California.

For 17 cents per piece with postage added, the company pledged to customize and mail 100,000 full color photos alleg-

ing a candidate opponent "supports the InYour-Face Agenda of the Radical Homosexual Fringe," with other options, such as photos of Queer Nation marchers or "family values" quotes, for anti-gay candidates to cut-and paste to aid their campaign.

"It was like Homophobia Helper," said Victory Fund Deputy Director Kathleen DeBold. "Just add your favorite opponent and voila! The perfect anti-gay piece."

After contacting the company, the Victory Fund reported the item to the Washington Blade, a lesbian-gay weekly, who contacted an official who would identify himself only as "Morgan".

"I take full responsibility," said Morgan, who further identified himself as vice president of sales and marketing, “I'm appalled, and we don't want to align ourselves or associate ourselves with any groups that have strong feelings of hatred towards any other groups".

Picture Perfect has subsequently withdrawn its flyers from the market.

Bono hires on with GLAAD

Chastity Bono has been appointed entertainment media director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, assuming the office November 1.

"This is an exciting time in Hollywood," said Bono. "With Ellen's imminent coming out and with more than 20 lesbian and gay characters already out on television, GLAAD is uniquely positioned to take a proactive approach to how we are represented in television and in film.”

Bono's duties, according to a statement released by the organization, will include "dealings with entertainment industry professionals and will develop strategies addressing lesbian and gay concerns."

Bono has previously served as spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, appearing at universities and lesbian-gay events nationwide. ♡
